Multimorbidity and frailty are two complex syndromes associated with aging. A new ADVANTAGE JA article published by Work Package 4 is assessing the correlations between these two syndromes in a systematic review and meta-analysis including 48 studies and 78 122 patients.

The systematic review shows that frailty and multimorbidity are two related conditions in older adults. The comprehensive literature search, together with the careful study selection and quality assessment, provides a reliable overview of the evidence in the field. Most frail individuals are also multimorbid but fewer multimorbid ones present also frailty. However, findings are not conclusive regarding the causal association between the two conditions. Further longitudinal and well-designed studies may help to untangle the relationship between frailty and multimorbidity.
