The Institute was founded by the polish government in 1951 as the state research institute in the field of rheumatology. The Institute is also the leading Polish rheumatology hospital treating rheumatism. In August 2015, the Polish government extended the tasks of the Institute and changed its name to the National Institute of Geriatrics, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation (NIGRR). The National Institute of Geriatrics, Rheumatology and Rehabilitation is responsible for the development of guidelines and recommendations for the Ministry of Health and National Health Fund in the field of geriatrics, rheumatology and rehabilitation.
